Name: Azuma Yukishiro
Canon: A3!
Canon Point: End of Main Story Part 8/Act 2
Age: Exact age is officially unknown, but definitely over 30. If pressed to give an exact I'll guess 35 and call it a day.
Background: Azuma's early life was happy, with a loving, well-traveled family, both parents and a doting older brother. Unfortunately, when he was a child, his family died tragically in a car accident. His parents' bodies were found, but his brother's was never recovered, leading Azuma to hope to this day that his brother is still alive.
Fast forward to Azuma, mid-thirties, professional cuddler and sometime pseudo-escort. He came upon Mankai Company members Juza and Banri being beaten up by some delinquents, and pretended to call the police to get the assailants to run off. This led to him taking a play flier, and eventually attending the Autumn Troupe's first production. In turn, seeing this led him to the Winter Troupe auditions.
Azuma is accepted into Winter Troupe and soon the five of them are gathered and barreling headlong into their new play. Unlike the other troupes, Winter is comprised entirely of adults (who try to stay out if each other's way) who all start out relatively good at acting. Everything is going smoothly for Azuma until rival troupe God-za challenges them to an act-off with the theme of angels, and subsequently tries to sow seeds of dissent. His reputation is called into question, setting off a conflict between himself and former God-za star Tasuku that is only solved (as so many of the Winter Troupe issues are) by mysterious means. Azuma and the Director, Izumi, get locked into a disappearing room together and he ends up admitting that he has a tragic past, which the Director keeps in confidence. Things come together, the play is a success, and along the way Azuma and Winter Troupe discover that the real solution to their problems is to get drunk en masse.
In Winter Troupe's second play, Azuma's role is that of the sympathetic villain/murderer in a mystery. But in their third play, Nocturnality, Azuma is the lead. With Tasuku as co-lead, things are awkward and unnatural for a variety of reasons, the most significant of which is that Azuma is having trouble taking on a distant loner role that hits too close to home. Tasuku invites him on a drive to the beach, assuming that Azuma loves the beach, and they talk things out. Meanwhile, Azuma has been spending time at the lonely high rise apartment he lived in before the Mankai Company dorms. Eventually, the whole trouple follows him there, and they have a night of chatting, confessions, and drinking (obviously) that ends in Azuma asking a sleeping Tasuku to go with him when he returns to his family home, which is still being kept and maintained, empty.
In Part 8, before they take on their sixth member officially, Tasuku makes good on that, much to Azuma's surprise. While the troupe is on a regional tour, Azuma and Tasuku head off to the house where they discover a decorative hair comb that Azuma's brother had intended to give him. This triggers Azuma to have a breakdown he doesn't immediately recover from, and as Tasuku carries him back to the hotel, the soon to be sixth member of the Winter Troupe takes Azuma's place on stage. This man, Guy, comes from Spring Troupe member Citron's homeland, and has come to retrieve him to return and ascend the throne. Because Azuma lives alone in one of the dorm rooms, Guy becomes his roommate. They become relatively close over the course of time, with evening drinks and lots of little chats. Azuma is even the biggest defender of Guy's humanity when he claims to be an android. But it's Guy who stirs Azuma to passion for theater that he couldn't grasp fully while dampening his emotions so as not to deal with his grief.
Winter Troupe travels to Guy and Citron's country, where they put on an explosive performance, then return to Japan with their new member still in tow, and still Azuma's roommate.
Personality:
If nothing else, Azuma is charismatic and personable with nearly everyone he meets. He may often only associate with people on a surface level, being cordial, helpful, and giving, always doing small favors and making polite and friendly conversation, but it disarms and charms. Everyone seems to feel welcome when he's around, and as one spends more time around him, most people easily let their guard down. It's impossible to know how many times his fellows in Mankai Company have sought his comfort and kindness for a nap (or maybe even a cuddle).
His flirtatiousness is absolutely legendary, and his wild adventures range from a surprise Valentine's date for the company's director, censored conversations about past lovers over drinks, and several of the other company guys actually not knowing where the truth ends and teasing begins. His sensuality is heavily noted, too, and he's often chosen for roles that require a subtle (or overt) maturity, mysteriousness, or sex appeal. Even when he plays a woman (or maybe especially then?) he absolutely charms men and women alike. Sure, different things work for different folks, but there are comments far and wide about his appearance, acting, and aura from basically anyone who breathes in his general vicinity.
He gives good advice and is a good listener, and one can infer he's the keeper of many secrets. He likens his "professional cuddling" more to counseling work than anything else, but he often goes out with clients for more than just that, and some even send him gifts even after he stops working as a cuddler to become an actor instead. There's implied intimacy and companionship, which may or may not go beyond simple listening to troubles. Still, he notes that he takes on the worries and emotions of others in order to stifle his own, so as not to deal with them.
At first, Azuma is closed off and secretive about himself. He doesn't show emotion much and tends to deflect attention to others or to a different aspect of himself (such as his sensuality) to escape discussing the heart of certain things. Azuma has hurt for a very long time over the loss of his family, and hardly allowed himself to grieve fully. He avoids attachment to avoid loss. While he's always done his best to maintain a calm and carefree facade, what he finds he really needs and ultimately wants is somewhere that he can freely express any emotion he chooses, to laugh and cry like he'd consider normal.
He warms up to Winter Troupe over time. Azuma states in an interview that acting and Winter Troupe helped him stop suppressing his emotions. In fact, without their slowly forged bonds, he may never have returned to his family home to confront his emotions and grieve. When he returns to the troupe from that, once he recovers, he's passionate about acting, about doing roles in ways only he can do. There's still a secretive air about him, but it's more of his playful side showing, the Azuma who enjoys being an enigma and keeping people guessing as to his motives or modes.
At all times, Azuma is clever, and endless source of random talents (like poker, shamisen, games, and languages) he learned so he could travel the world as he pleased and keep clients entertained. He's a generous gift giver, and the unflappable Madonna of the Mankai dorms, according to many of the other troupes. His skin care tips make him fast friends with Azami and Yuki, his comfortable lap makes him popular with Hisoka (with whom he later co-stars and bonds), and even the high schoolers will take naps in his room. He invites people to color with him in adult coloring books, suggests fun outings and activities regularly, and eventually generally embraces Mankai company as his new center of life.
Powers: Azuma is actually a totally normal human being! He can act pretty darn well, but more than anything he has a talent for soothing people to sleep. Oh, and he's a great listener. Expert drinker. Kills it at poker to the point they do a play about it? He's generally good at games, like mah jong and even little random word games. He can play the shamisen and do geisha dances, too. This list keeps getting longer. ...And he can converse at a basic level (at least) in several languages.
